Design by Nani Marquina with Care & Fair, 2009.
By nanimarquina.
Kala means "morning" and "art" in Hindi. The Kala Rug project arose from nanimarquina's desire to collaborate with the Care & Fair association, whose principal objective is to eradicate child labor from the carpet manufacturing industry in India, Nepal and Pakistan.
With the creativity and imagination of the Indian children themselves as a starting point, nanimarquina organized a drawing competition among pupils of several Care & Fair schools. The nanimarquina design team then adapted the winning drawing and turned it into the Kala rug.
A portion of each Kala Rug sale is earmarked for funding a new Care & Fair school in Bhadohi, India.
Hand-tufted of 100% New Zealand Wool, the Kala Rug is available in two sizes.
