OW 224

Designer: Ole Wanscher

Studying under Kaare Klint at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Ole Wanscher would become an integral part of the core aesthetic and functionality of Danish design. Influenced by 1700s English furniture, his designs would take on 18th-century characteristics whilst grounded in modernist ideology. In applying his knowledge of traditional craftsmanship to modern industrial production techniques, Wanscher’s furniture increased in popularity in post-war Denmark. The sleek and refined OW224 Rungstedlund Dining table demonstrates Wanscher’s admiration for 18th-century English furniture, as is evident in its softly curved silhouette. Designed in 1962, the OW224 Rungstedlund Dining Table was originally intended for Rungstedlund, which today holds a museum. Characterized by his organic signature style, the table achieves a lightness in form owing to a softly curved tabletop and a subtle slope on the inside of the square legs which are rounded on the outside. An elegant bookmarked veneer surface displays Wanscher’s respect for natural materials, highlighting depth and uniformity in the oak grain. A timeless solution for flexible dining, the OW224 dining table is available in FSC-certified oak with extension plates in oak or grey and black MDF. Despite never receiving worldwide acclaim in his lifetime, Carl Hansen & Søn continue to demonstrate Wanscher’s remarkable legacy with this extendable dining table joining his collection of classic yet modern designs.
